Trash Cleanup Initiative Aims to Lessen Debris on Local Beaches to Aid Turtles

With trash and debris generating harmful effects to nesting sea turtles and hatchlings on local beaches in the tri-county area, a local nonprofit organization hopes to clear the way for the vulnerable reptiles. Loggerhead Marinelife Center is launching its inaugural Tour de Trash beach cleanups at different sites throughout the area to clean the habitat around the area’s coastlines.

Along with helping sea turtles and other marine life, the beach cleanups can serve as a way to raise awareness on ocean conversation and the role plastic plays in pollution. Participants will also receive t-shirts and limited giveaways. The inaugural Tour de Trash receives part of its funding from Ocean Conservancy’s Small Grants Program.

Confirmed dates include:

  • Saturday, Sept. 4 – Lake Worth Beach, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Sunday, Sept. 5 – Dania Beach Pier, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
