Red Rooster Overtown Celebrates Black History Month With Special Menu

The restaurant aims to recognize invaluable contributions, resilience, and cultural legacy that have impacted the restaurant and the community.

Red Rooster Overtown is honoring Black History Month 2024 by offering unique additions alongside its a la carte menu for February. Each week during the month, Red Rooster will craft up two new specials highlighting the different traditions and flavors from West & Central Africa, The Caribbean, New Orleans, and South Carolina/Georgia low country.

From Feb. 1 to Feb. 6, the journey will begin in West & Central Africa, where the week’s specials are the RR Palm Nut Soup ($150 – serves two to three people) and Goat & Chicken Jollof Rice ($30). The next stop will be the Caribbean, where the week’s specials are Bajan Style Creole Fish ($45) and Duck Leg Souse ($31). During the third week, the journey will explore flavors from New Orleans, featuring Seafood Gumbo ($25) and Banana Fosters Bread Pudding ($12). Finally, the February offerings will conclude in South Carolina/Georgia low country, featuring tasty dishes like Carolina Style Smoked Pulled Whole Hog ($28) and Frogmore Stew ($42).

Red Rooster is located in the former “Clyde Killen’s Pool Hall” in Overtown, a notable hot spot in the 1960s and is a historic site that has hosted several icons such as Muhammed Ali, Aretha Franklin, and Count Basie. The restaurant at 920 NW 2nd Ave. serves comfort food that celebrates the roots of American cuisine and the diverse culinary traditions of the neighborhood.
