JAFCO in My Sneakers 5k Run and Family Fun Walk

THE EVENT  JAFCO volunteers are lacing up their running shoes to get ready for the Inaugural In My Sneakers Certified 5K Run and Family Fun Walk raising money for a very special project to help South Florida families and children living with developmental disabilities.

The morning will be filled with activities, entertainment and fun for the entire family. Funds raised from the In My Sneakers event will benefit existing JAFCO Developmental Disabilities Programs and the new JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Center for Children with developmental disabilities. Event goers will have the opportunity to meet local service providers working in our community to help improve the lives of children and families living with special needs.

The run isn’t just for the avid racer. The entire family is welcome to come and enjoy an entire morning filled with food, fun, games and charity auctions.

THE CAUSE  Approximately 4.5 million children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with some sort of developmental disability, with autism being the most common. Since there has been such an alarming increase in diagnosis, the JAFCO Board of Trustees decided to expand its existing services to better serve all children with developmental special needs and their families. This idea developed into the creation of the JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities.

The Sam and Adele Borger Campus of The David Posnack Jewish Children’s Center is scheduled to open in early 2014 and will provide day, evening and overnight onsite respite care for up to two weeks per year for children with developmental disabilities, allowing parents to have a much-needed break. The center will provide an inclusive atmosphere for the entire family including family support, child enrichment activities and high quality therapies.

JAFCO is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children in South Florida. In 2009 JAFCO extended their mission to include services and support for families who are raising a child with developmental disabilities such as Autism, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disabilities, Prader Willi, etc.
