Island City Stage to Host Free Public Forum on Mental Health

Island City Stage in Wilton Manors invites the public to its free mental health forum, “State Of Mental Health – Recognizing Who Needs Help.” It is the company’s third Behind the Red Curtain free public forum preceding the March 17 debut of its production of Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly, Last Summer, a gothic mystery that explores insanity, repression and greed.

From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on March 7 at Island City Stage, the forum will offer a chance for attendees to discuss the state of mental health and how to improve access and services. Experts will discuss traumatic events and their impact while providing insight into the mental health profession’s history and recognizing calls for help. The award-winning theatre company invites the community to take part in the discussion. Andy Rogow, the Island City Stage’s artistic director, will moderate the panel, which will include

  • Bob Scardino, LCSW, CAP, Director of Clinical Services, SunServe
  • Dawn M. Silver, PhD, Chief Operating Officer, Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County
  • Michael Schenker, PhD, Psychologist
  • Charmaine S. Borda, PhD, LMFT, LMHC, ACC, CHt, Clinical Director: The Blue Couch, Inc.
  • Rob Freund, PhD, LMHC, Assistant Professor, Lynn University, and Primary Therapist, Comprehensive Wellness Centers

Suddenly, Last Summer is part of the theater company’s 10th Anniversary 2021-22 South Florida Season and will run from March 17 through April 17.

Directed by Rogow, Suddenly, Last Summer stars Angie Radosh as Violet Venable, Jeanine Gangloff Levy as Catherine Holly and Jonathan Furedy as Dr. Cukrowicz. Other upcoming productions include The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam from June 9 to July 10 and One In Two by Donja R. Love from Aug. 4 to Sept. 4.

The mental health forum is supported by SunServe and the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County, Inc. It is free to attend, but registration is required by visiting Islandcitystage.org/behind-the-red-curtain-community-forum
