Feel Good Stories

Junior League distributes diapers: Nineteen nonprofits that work with infants and toddlers throughout Palm Beach County, and into Broward, received much-needed diapers courtesy of the Junior League of Boca Raton. Responding to supply demands due to the coronavirus shutdown, volunteers filled trucks and one school bus with a combined 100,000-plus diapers, part of the League’s ongoing Diaper Bank initiative. Among the nonprofits that received diapers: Caridad Center, Children’s Healing Institute, Drug Abuse Foundation, Farmworker Coordinating Council, Florence Fuller Child Development Center, Guatemalan Maya Center, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Broward, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Palm Beach, Mary’s Pregnancy Resource Center, Milagro Center, Opportunity and Place of Hope.

Good vibes at Akoya: The building management team at Akoya Boca West continues to keep its residents engaged during the stay-at-home directive with weekly events. Most recently, fitness instructors led residents through heart-pumping balcony workouts during a Spirit Day. As one resident remarked: “It’s nice to have something to look forward to.”

Meals for those in need: A collaborative effort between Space of Mind Schoolhouse in Delray Beach, its nonprofit initiative (Community Classroom Project) and local chef Blake Malatesta is providing healthy meals and culinary education for families—and dinner and school lunches for children served by local nonprofits. Any family can purchase meal boxes by visiting this link. Each dinner meal box includes ingredients for the dinner, a recipe and a link to watch Malatesta prepare the feast; prices range from $24 to $45. School box lunches are $10 and also include a cooking demo. For every meal box purchased, Space of Mind’s Community Classroom Project will donate one to a local nonprofit. To date, more than 200 meals have been donated to organizations like The Milagro Center and Achievement Centers for Children & Families. This week’s menu includes sweet potato curry, chicken thigh schnitzel, and corn and quinoa elote. Meals can be picked up on Wednesdays between 1 and 4 p.m. at The Wine Room in Delray (411 E. Atlantic Ave.).
