Feeding South Florida Commemorates Hunger Action Month With Activities to Combat Hunger

One in nine individuals in South Florida remain uncertain about where to get their next meal.

Throughout September, Feeding South Florida is raising awareness for Hunger Action Month with a series of free events the entire community can participate in to take action against hunger. As the leading hunger-relief organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties, Feeding South Florida is dedicated to promoting awareness and providing resources to combat food insecurity in the region. With the community’s help, the organization aims to make a difference in the lives of those struggling with hunger.

Feeding South Florida is currently providing food assistance to 1.1 million families who are experiencing hunger. Feeding South Florida is urging the community to plan for September and consider how they can participate in hunger-relief events by mobilizing their municipality, company, civic or social group, friends and family members to “GO ORANGE” found on feedingsouthflorida.org/events/.

An online auction will take place in September, allowing interested bidders to acquire unique and fun items while supporting hunger-relief efforts. In addition, Go Orange t-shirts and orange mustaches will be available for purchase to raise awareness about the issue of hunger and encourage others to take action toward its resolution. Monetary contributions made during September will be matched one-to-one, allowing donations to go even further. Every donation is crucial, as just $1 donated can help Feeding South Florida provide around four meals to a family in need.

Hunger Action Events:

Special Hunger Action Volunteer Shifts (Sept. 1 – Sept. 29) – The community is being extended an invitation to participate in a volunteering opportunity that involves sorting food and packing meal boxes for families, children and seniors. This is a hands-on effort to provide sustenance for the South Florida population. Those who choose to partake in this initiative can also look forward to various orange-themed events, prizes and other fun activities that will be available throughout the month. Cost: Free

Moustache Monday (Sept. 18) – The community can support Feeding South Florida’s hunger-relief efforts by purchasing an orange mustache to wear on this day. Capture a selfie to post and tag: @FeedingSouthFlorida on Facebook, @feedingsouthflorida on Instagram and @feedingsouthfl on Twitter using hashtags: #hungeractionmonth, #endhunger, #goorange. Cost: $5

Outrun Hunger 5K (Saturday, Sept. 23/Also Hunger Action Day) – Okeeheelee Park (7715 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach) is the setting for this event. Participants are given the option to run or walk as an individual or a team and can raise funds online for Feeding South Florida leading up to race day. Running groups and fitness classes will find this event an excellent opportunity to establish a benchmark run time. Cost: $25 for registration; $40 for registration + 5K T-shirt; $250 for Hunger Hero package.

“Hunger Action Month is a great opportunity for the community to come together and be a part of the solution. This month-long initiative has a tangible and lasting impact on Feeding South Florida’s mission to end hunger in South Florida,” Paco Vélez says, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “It’s important to remember that our community is still experiencing the effects of increased inflation with rising food costs, fuel prices, ballooning insurance premiums and increased housing costs. Earning at or below minimum wage and living on it in South Florida is not easy to do in this environment, this means more families will continue to need food assistance for a longer period of time as this trend continues.”
