Creativity During Quarantine

Actors’ Playhouse, which has served as a beacon to South Florida’s cultural life for the past 30 years, is calling on all creative minds to participate in its “Stories That Connect Us All” creative writing series. While millions of Americans are being asked to stay home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Coral Gables theatre is asking residents of Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties to share how the pandemic has affected them.

Submissions must be under 8 minutes long and in monologue or third-person storytelling form (not multicharacter). All entries will be reviewed by members of Actors’ Playhouse. Writers whose work is selected will be invited to perform their piece at the theater once it is safe to resume operation. With the world paralyzed at this moment in history, the ‘Stories That Connect Us All’ series hopes to emphasize the importance of creativity in times of hardship.

“The coronavirus crisis highlights the growing need for creativity in today’s society,” said Actors’ Playhouse artistic director David Arisco. “We need the creativity of public-health professionals to develop strategies for limiting the spread of the virus. We need the creativity of doctors and scientists to develop a vaccine. And we also need the creativity of writers to keep a record of what’s happening—for the sake of history.”

The deadline for submissions is May 1. Detailed guidelines and submission information is available here.
