Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Cleveland Clinic Weston: The recently opened Lozick Women’s Center (pictured, left) offers screenings, diagnosis and treatment for patients with breast cancer and breast illness. Local blogger and breast cancer awareness advocate Ginger Harris notes that the Lozick Center goes above and beyond in its offerings. “They also [take] a holistic approach to medical care … As part of the treatment process, patients can partake in various complementary medicine services such as art therapy, yoga and even a wig boutique.” (my.clevelandclinic.org/florida)

Memorial Cancer Institute: One of the state’s largest cancer programs offers an array of supportive services throughout the stages of treatment and recovery. Among them: scalp cooling therapy (to prevent hair loss) for select chemotherapy regimens and diagnoses; integrative therapies, including acupuncture, to ease side effects; and an Image Recovery Program with personalized services for patients adjusting to the physical and emotional changes they may experience. Not My Daughter … Find a Cure Now! The Parkland/Coral Springs coalition of volunteers that raises money for its ongoing battle against breast cancer will stage a virtual telethon on Monday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, PAP Corps and other cancer research-based organizations. To view the telethon feed, check out the organization’s Facebook page; to donate, visit notmydaughter.org.

Holy Cross Cancer Research Institute: In its standing as an NCORP site (a program of the National Cancer Institute), the institute at Holy Cross can offer innovative therapies to cancer patients before they become standard in the community. Among its recent studies involving breast cancer is one that incorporates the study drug MEN1611. There’s a protein in your body, PI3K, that’s altered in breast cancer tissue, causing cancer cells to grow and multiply. The MEN1611 drug slows down or stops the growth of those cells by blocking the PI3K protein. (holy-cross.com/find-a-service-or-specialty/cancer-care)

Legends Tavern and Grille: The gastropub is teaming up with Glam-a-Thon—the fashionable breast cancer charity that helps underserved patients of Broward Health—to raise funds for the nonprofit. Legends locations in Plantation, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Sunrise and Lighthouse Point will serve a Strawberry Whitney cocktail (pictured, top, with Pink Whitney vodka, strawberry syrup and ginger ale); a portion of proceeds will benefit Glam-a-Thon.
