Boca Raton Museum of Art has new online artwork available for Black History Month

Through Black History Month and beyond, Boca Raton Museum of Art is shining a light on Black artists through online viewings.

The Signing: The museum premiere of this work by Renee Cox reimagines Howard Chandler Christy’s historical painting, Scene at The Signing of the Constitution of the United States. The work will be on display through Sept. 2021. Viewers can also check out the online video of the work here. (Note: A portion of the work is pictured above.)

“The imagery of The Signing, by Renee Cox, brings to light that although people of color did not participate in the signing of the Constitution, they have most certainly played important roles and made vital contributions to the building of this country,” says Kathleen Goncharov, Senior Curator of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. “Museum visitors are encouraged to acknowledge that people of color have been largely left out of history books,”

My 13 Presidents: The late Benjamin Patterson, the only Black member of the Fluxus Art Movement, was a symphony musician who left the United States in 1960 because no orchestra would hire a Black musician. His work “humorously depicts the13 U.S. presidents that served during his lifetime (1934 – 2016) and ends with President Obama.” An online viewing is available here.

Strange Fruit in Florida: This online webinar by Tameka Hobbs, founding director of the FMU Social Justice Institute at Florida Memorial University, covers Florida’s history of racial violence. It can be viewed through March 4 here.
