The holidays are intended to be fun and festive, but let’s face it, they can also be stressful!  The pressure to meet expectations and obligations of family, friends, and work can make you want to reach for an extra glass of eggnog or holiday cookie!  Here are 4 tips for stressing less this holiday.

Be Realistic: People put a lot of unnecessary pressure on themselves trying to have the “perfect” holiday, but perfection doesn’t exist.  Create realistic expectations of yourself and others.  Don’t overcommit yourself and try to keep things in perspective.  Set healthy boundaries by saying “Yes” when you want to and “No” when you need to.

Maintain Balance: Remember the holidays are about giving, not just to others, but also to yourself.  A little self-care goes a long way!  If you find yourself out of balance, slow down, breathe, and ask yourself what YOU need to do to take care of YOU.  Recharge your batteries with a spa day, take a yoga class, enjoy a walk on the beach, or visit with friends.

Be Thankful: Research shows that gratitude reduces stress, while cultivating joy, confidence, happiness, and optimism.  Take time to reflect on the positive things in your life and find creative ways of expressing gratitude by letting someone special know how much you appreciate them.

Whatever cultural or religious background you come from, it’s important to remember the reason for the season.  Whether you keep old traditions alive or start new ones, make it meaningful in your own way.

Holidays can be the best of times or the worst of times, depending on your outlook and how you manage stress.  If you need additional support, call Dr. Kate and the team of caring therapists at 954-391-5305 ext. 1 or visit www.BayviewTherapy.com.
